On With Your Show is your one-stop amateur theatre production resource for tips and tools on how to put on a play or musical. This site and the Theatre Production Handbook are written by "drama mama's" who learned play and musical production in the high school and community volunteer trenches. Our goal is to distill years of practical experience into an actionable theatre production guide you can put to use right away.

Six Easy Theatre Production Steps

If you are in charge of picking the show, putting a production team together and supervising the enterprise, you are the Producer. Whoever is in charge of working with cast and crew to stage the show is the Director. In many amateur productions one person serves as Producer and Director. Compare the roles you have in place with the roles delineated in our Amateur Theatre Organization Chart. So, Producer, on with your show! Work through these six easy steps, and you will be well on your way.
  1. Select a Show - start with our play and musical selection worksheets.
  2. Plan - this is key to producing a great play or musical. No shortcuts here.
  3. Build a Team with care. Theatre is a team sport.
  4. Design - set, costumes, hair & makeup, props...
  5. Publicize - we'll help you devise a simple plan that will fill the house.
  6. Perform - your play or musical to great applause!
Tell us what you need. We can access resources and people that will be able to address many of the challenges you'll face when you produce your play or musical. High school musical, community play, church pageant...whatever your theatre production challenge, we'll help you get on with your show! Find how to tools throughout this site. For complete resources see our Theatre Production Handbook and Stage Manager Prompt Book. On with your show!

My playground was the theatre. I'd sit and watch my mother pretend for a living. As a young girl, that's pretty seductive.
