Build a Set

E-mail Print PDF
There are several types of components used in building a set:
  • Flats
  • Platforms
  • Stairs
  • Rakes
  • Structures/Props
  • Flooring
Set components can be assembled in a variety of ways and if built and stored properly can be re-used from one show to the next.

Flats

Hard Flats: constructed from a sheet of plywood and a frame of lumber. Very durable – good for doors and windows.
Soft Flats: constructed from a frame of lumber and fabric. A wood frame with stretched canvas or muslin painted to the desired effect. Not as durable as a hard flat but lighter to transport and carry.

Flat construction pieces:

  • Rails:    top and bottom framing pieces
  • Stiles:    sides of frame (usually the height of the flat)
  • Toggles: cross pieces that run between the stiles
  • Corner Blocks: triangle pieces of wood used to join corners of the flat
  • Braces: a supporting attachment between the rail and stile
  • Keystones: shaped pieces used to join the toggles to the rails
  • Straps: rectangle pieces used to join toggles to the rails (used instead of keystones)

Platforms

Platforms are constructed by securing a plywood surface to a frame with legs. Platforms are built in varying heights and are used to raise specific parts of the action or scene. When bolted together, platforms become a freestanding stage. Platforms with wheels are sometimes called wagons.

If possible, construct a frame with hinges to make it collapsible for ease of storage. Otherwise, keep a number of different legs with standard heights in stock.

After years of use the plywood tops may get squeaky and full of holes. For a little extra life, pull out the screws and flip the plywood top upside down. Use new screws and new screw holes.

Stairs

  • Self supporting units
  • Stairs attached at top and bottom points of the set
  • Stairs should be constructed with uniform steps. If there are more than three steps, the staircase should have a handrail for safety.

Rakes

An angled stage or section of stage used as an acting space. Constructed of plywood and lumber with strong enough support for the actors.

Structures/Props

  • Wooden cubes: very versatile set elements. Sturdy enough to be used as tables, chairs, benches, etc.
  • Trees: a strong, easy to move tree can be constructed from a simple wood frame and chicken wire. Cover the chicken wire with newspaper or muslin strips from an old flat and spray with foam. If the tree needs to carry weight, a platform or ladder can be constructed into the frame before covering.
  • Figures/Busts
  • Columns

Flooring

  • Rugs
  • Carpet
  • Vinyl flooring
  • Hardboard (can be painted)
